Our story and purpose

Founded in 2000 by Graham Summerfield, Anshin Karate Club was created with a clear focus: bringing authentic martial arts, wellbeing, and peace of mind directly to our local communities in Barnsley, and the surrounding areas.  Anshin for Life was accepted into the Charity Commission in September 2026 (registration number 1219481) with a mission to promote community participation in healthy recreation, in particular by the provision of facilities and instruction and training in karate

Quality over quantity: martial arts as a way of life

Graham founded Anshin with a dedication to genuine personal development rather than commercial profit. Because teaching is a lifelong vocation rather than a day job or business venture, our focus has always remained on individual growth, discipline, and practical self-defence. In Japanese, 'Anshin' translates directly to 'Peace of mind'—the exact philosophy Graham shared in his 2017 book on self-defence. To guarantee that our work continues to serve the community for generations, we registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO registration number: 1219481) with the Charity Commission.

A warm welcome for every age and ability

If you have never stepped into a dojo before, taking that first step can feel daunting. But karate at Anshin is not about aggressive punching, kicking, or shouting.  Modern martial arts often train people to fight without explaining why, which breeds confrontation. We cultivate calm, confident individuals who strive for peaceful, fulfilling lives. We run as a family charity with deep family values, meaning nobody is ever excluded. Any initial nervousness melts away within the first twenty minutes on the mat.

Building community centres across Yorkshire

Our vision extends far beyond our evening sessions. We are actively working towards establishing dedicated community centres in the Barnsley and surrounding areas where everyone can access the transformative benefits of martial arts and social connection. We firmly believe that age is no barrier: our programmes encourage older residents to maintain physical mobility, overcome isolation, and enjoy social interaction for a longer, healthier life. For young children, the training builds concentration, balance, and proven improvements in schoolwork.

"Anshin has given our whole family genuine peace of mind. The focus on discipline, respect, and supportive friendship has transformed my children's confidence both in school and at home."
